The Renaissance and the Century of the Genoese
In terms of culture, in the Renaissance, Liguria played an important role thanks to three important patron popes such as Niccolò V , Sisto IV and Giuliano II .
In 1528, Admiral Andrea Doria reserved the government of the Republic to an oligarchy of nobles and made Genoa ally with the Emperor Charles V of Habsburg .
This finally ensured stability to the city, and from that moment "el siglo del los genoveses" began , "the century of the Genoese", during which the rich merchants became important bankers who financed the most important European crowns.
However, the numerous Saracen towers found in various areas of the Ligurian coast date back to this period: there was, in fact, a revival of Arab piracy. The century of the Genoese ended due to the crisis of the government of Spain and of the other ruling houses that were no longer able to pay the debts to the Genoese bankers.
