Holidays in Monterosso
Monterosso is the first village of the Cinque Terre Park that is found coming from the west and the only one that can be easily reached by car.
Worth seeing in Monterosso
The town is divided in two: the first part is the Borgo Vecchio , made up of alleys and streets that climb the hill (such as the Passeggiata delle Agavi which from the promontory of San Cristofor or reaches the Capuchin convent), with the beach and the railway and which preserves the fourteenth-century Church of San Giovanni Battista and the paintings of Van Dyck , Castello , Strozzi and Cambiaso .
Then there is the Fegina Seaside Center , to the west, where Montale spent his holidays as a boy. On the beach, a statue of Neptune the Giant from the early years of the last century dominates, from which, climbing along a mule track to Punta del Mesco , about 300 meters above sea level, surrounded by greenery, there are the remains of the fifteenth century Church of Sant'Antonio Abate , whose monastery dates back to the year 1000. From Monterosso you go up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Soviore , of early medieval origin.
Another walk not to be missed is that of the wine bars, to savor the excellent local wine.
Having fun in Monterosso
Among the various activities in Monterosso, trekking and sailing stand out . Also held here, the swimming marathon, up to the Vernazza Bay and the August Regattas .
In June, the Corpus Domini Infiorata is one of the most famous folkloristic events, where everyone adorns the streets with floral motifs, and on the 24th, during the Feast of San Giovanni , hundreds of candles are scattered into the sea.
On 26 August, the Night of other times is celebrated, or the passage that took place in 1254 from the republic of Pisa to that of Genoa , with more than two hundred extras in period costume; the event reaches its peak with the signing of the Lords of the two Republics at 10.30 pm.
In September, the Band Rally is celebrated, an event that attracts bands from all over and which, after an individual performance, ends with a collective concert.
The Lemon Festival , the most important local fruit (also celebrated by Montale), takes place on the Saturday of the Ascension, and finally, on the second Tuesday of September, the Anchovy Festival is celebrated, of which Monterosso boasts a unique and precious variety .
